Daven Mayeda

Daven Mayeda knew at a very early age that he wanted to be an artist. He spent his childhood exploring ways to be creative which resulted in his interest in drawing, painting, calligraphy, and composing classical music.

Daven began as a hairstylist and makeup artist working on the big island of Hawai’I but eventually he relocated to Los Angeles to pursue his dreams. Once in LA, Daven was hired as an instructor at the Cao Institute of Aesthetics, a Paul Mitchell Partner School, where he taught hair cutting, coloring, and makeup.

Still based in LA, Daven is spending the first two months of 2010 on the road with Mariah Carey doing her hair on each stop of the North American Tour. When Daven has free time, he travels across the country teaching makeup workshops because it allows him to interact with new artists from all walks of life.

A close friend once told Daven, “Passion will make you crazy”. Even though that may be true, Daven admits “Passion is what drives me in my career. I can’t imagine living without it. People need to passionate about something in life. I am fortunate enough to have found mine and made it into a career.”

I was excited to give Jenna something fun and young for her 2011 Grammy hairstyle to go with her sexy dress. The bands of her dress had such great texture I created her beachy wild hair texture to echo it.

I started with her clean wet hair and applied the Fredric Fekkai tousled wave spray on the mid-shaft and ends and the Suave Professionals Volumizing Foam on the roots. Starting at the bottom I wrapped and twisted small sections and clipped them into a pin curl, going up to the top of the head finishing on the part. Next I diffused the hair to get it dry without blowing it around too much. When the hair was 75% dry I released the clips and finished diffusing. To create the underpinning in the back I made three ponytails and pinned them underneath each other. Finishing the look by detailing with an Enzo Milano cone iron to the keep the waves soft, and a mist of the Suave Professionals Extra Hold so it stayed in place all night long.

Get the Look: Natalie Portman at the People’s Choice Awards

Forget ballerina buns; Black Swan star Natalie Portman opted for soft and sophisticated ponytail at last night’s People’s Choice Awards. Her stylist, John D, told us how he used Phyto products to get the look:

1. John D. started by prepping Portman’s towel-dried hair, spraying Phytovolume Actif at the roots to build in some lift.

2. He then emulsified used equal parts Phyto 7 and Phyto Professional Glossing Cream (about a pea-size drop of each) in his hands and ran the mixture through the ends of her hair to add extra moisture and shine. “This is great for hair that gets styled often,” he says.

3. After drying Portman’s hair, he curled 1-inch sections with a 3/4-inch Enzo Milano curling rod, concentrating on getting lift at the base/root area. He misted the curls with Phyto Professional Workable Holding Spray and gave it a quick comb with his fingers.

4. Next, John D. sectioned out a small top section at the bang area to be pulled back and styled; he gathered the rest of her hair back into a ponytail (he wrapped some hair around the elastic band to conceal it).

5. After securing the pony, he released the top section–maintaining its lift–and parted it slightly to the side.

6. Once the style was fully in place, he gave it a final misting of Phyto Professional Workable Holding Spray to make it last throughout the show.

“As far as determining the look for the evening, originally we had thought we would do a great head of tousled waves, leaving the hair down,” John says. “But once we looked at the dress again, I decided that something off of the shoulders would be better. That’s when I suggested the pony, which kept the look a bit lighter and more fun! “
